From Harold Arlen to Ani DiFranco, songwriters are
the life-blood of Buffalo’s original music scene.
On July 1st, three outstanding artists, Noa
Bursie, Kilissa Cissoko and Annette Daniels
Taylor, will join forces in what promises to be
one of the hottest concerts of the summer!
The Hot Mamas Songwriters concert was conceived
when women musicians, poets and dancers came
together for Buffalo’s first Mamapalooza festival
in May. Continuing in this spirit of
collaboration, the Hot Mamas concert will foster
an exchange of creative energy and passion. In a
round-robin format, the performers will blend
their talents, harmonizing, improvising and
accompanying each other. Each songwriter will also
present a set of her own music.
Noa Bursie, whose indie-released CD Talk Story is
a best seller at New World Record, offers
intelligently crafted lyrics with folk and jazz
influenced vocals. She creates vivid, cinematic
imagery with her songs. Comparisons to Tracy
Chapman and Roberta Flack only begin to convey the
subtle power of her singing and writing. Buffalo
News critic Jeff Miers calls Bursie "a stunning
technical musician and songwriter." Bursie infuses
new life into the singer/songwriter genre with a
distinctive and powerful spirit. Generating the
vibe of 60’s legend, Richie Havens, the smoldering
intensity of Nina Simone, the elegant, lyric
poetry of Joni Mitchell, and the
storytelling/songwriting dynamic of Stevie Wonder
or James Taylor, Noa handles her Guild D50 like a
Stradivarius, or a drum, or an impetuous lover,
engaging the listener – offering a roadmap to
sonorous landscapes that resonate with passion and
conviction.
Kilissa Cissoko, renown on the folk/anti-folk
scene in the 90’s as a member of the Jazzabels
(and currently as a member of the Frank Zappa
tribute band Voice of Cheez), makes her solo debut
with an outpouring of songs in the alternative
rock and soul vein. A multi-instrumentalist, she
has produced her upcoming release Supersexy
Girlfriend “Prince style” performing all the
tracks herself. A master of melody, her tuneful
choruses remain with the listener for days. From
flirtatious love songs to political rants, she
sings with jazz-nuanced phrasing and exuberant
grace.
Annette Daniels Taylor, organizer of Mamapalooza
2006 Buffalo, serves up hip-hop, soul and poetry
with a warm and powerful voice. A native of Staten
Island, NYC’s forgotten borough, she developed a
keen writer’s eye for conveying people, places and
feelings. Her songs explore both the beauty and
tensions of everyday life. Taylor is a writer in
residence at the Langston Hughes Institute and a
teaching artist with the Arts In Education
Institute of Western New York. She will also be
appearing as a finalist in the upcoming Nickel
City Poetry Slam.
PLUS: At midnight catch the surfin’ dance grooves
of The Waves, Buffalo’s Brit-Pop trio. Their

Surfpop.” Steve Elliott - Vocals, Guitar; Mustang
